This is an uncertain time and we want our neighbors to stay safe. We hope that everyone is staying inside, washing their hands frequently with soap and water for 20 seconds, and keeping a six foot distance from people they encounter if they leave the house. This article provides tips on how to stay safe. Here are some resources that may be of use to our community:
GLENWOOD
GLENWOOD HELPING HANDS: Concerned neighbors are coordinating a grassroots mutual aid project. If you or your neighbors need help picking up groceries, picking up prescriptions, someone to check in on you because you live alone, or help finding resources or food assistance, please contact the Glenwood Helping Hands Hotline at 336-355-1005 or email [email protected]. The volunteers have been vetted and know at least 3 other people in the neighborhood, their addresses have been verified and most have lived here for years. Email [email protected] if you would like to volunteer to help.
COMMUNITY MEALS: Neighborhood churches and community organizations are serving free take-away meals or free pantry bags:
- Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 5:00pm, Christ United Methodist Church Glenwood, 1417 Glenwood Ave.
- Wednesdays at 5:00pm, Grace Community Church, 643 W. Gate City Blvd.
- Each Thursday, from 10am to 3pm, Hope Academy will be providing free pantry bags. 40 bags will be given out each week, first come, first served.
PECK ELEMENTARY is one of 32 Guilford County Schools grab-and-go meal sites. Anyone 18 years and younger can pick up meals from 11am to Noon, Monday through Friday. Students can go to any of the locations and pick up their lunch for the day and breakfast for the following morning. Adults can pick up meals for anyone 18 and under in their household. Children do not have to be present and do not have to be students of GCS schools to qualify.
LITTLE FREE PANTRY locations in Glenwood:
- Lexington Ave. near W. Florida St.
- Willomore St. between W. Florida and Linwood Streets
- The corner of Haywood and McCormick Streets
The little free pantries are stocked regularly by community members and neighborhood churches. Leftover take-away meals are often placed in the pantries, so check there if you missed the meal times listed above. (The Lexington Ave. pantry seems to be the busiest.)
THE PEOPLE’S [POP UP] MARKET opened on May 28th and has produce, plant starts and prepared foods sold by Glenwood neighbors and local vendors. Double your EBT/SNAP! Thursday evenings from 6-8pm, in the parking lot of Christ United Methodist Church Glenwood, 1417 Glenwood Ave. Keep up with offerings and happenings on the People’s Market Facebook page.
