Diali Cissokho & Kaira Ba
Diali Cissokho & Kaira Ba features Senegalese griot Diali Cissokho—a vocalist, percussionist, dancer, and master of the kora (a 21-string African harp). Diali hails from a famed lineage of musicians and storytellers traceable back to the 14th century in his native West Africa. The band is rounded out by four North Carolina-raised musicians, bringing their own musical influences to bear.
Tradition meets modernity in this band; African music embraces its American offspring, jazz and blues, and the result is a fresh and exhilarating musical experience. Irresistible dance grooves, captivating performances, fiery percussion, and super-tight arrangements communicate unforgettable joy and passion—and bring audiences into the “great love and harmony” that the band’s name signifies.
Freylach Time!
Freylach Time! is a Klezmer Dance Band that plays Traditional Eastern European Jewish music and is one of the most popular klezmer bands in North Carolina. Formed in Durham in 1998, the trio features the energetic and expressive clarinet playing of Riki Friedman, the rhythmic and melodic accordion of Mike Mcquown, and the powerful, creative string bass of Stewart Aull. There revival of the binding music of Eastern European Jewish tradition becomes again part of what binds a community together, in joy, today, in the here and now.
